YEMANJÁ

YEMANJÁ is the Queen of the Ocean, the patron deity of the fishermen and the survivors of shipwrecks, the feminine principle of creation and the spirit of moonlight. The YEMANJÁ Festival is a major festival of the Candomblé religion in the Rio Vermelho district of Salvador, Bahia.

Mães-de-santo and filhas-de-santo (priestess and female followers of the orixás) sing and dance from beginning at daybreak summoning YEMANJÁ to the festival. Offerings are placed in boats and carried down to the sea, where they are set afloat. Thousands of people flock to the coast for the festivities.

Gifts for YEMANJÁ usually include flowers and objects of female vanity (perfume, jewelry, combs, lipsticks, mirrors), she is said to be quite vain and therefore rather fond of all manner of products to make herself more beautiful. These are gathered in large baskets and taken out to the sea by local fishermen. There after a huge party takes place on the streets of Rio Vermelho.

mulherSALVADOR DA BAHIA
Bahia is the most African of all Brazilian states. In fact Africa abounds in the capital city of Salvador, also known as the "Black Rome" because of its celebrated church architecture and 80% African population. In this city of over three million, the culture is ruled by visible African ideas. The local cuisine, musical traditions,
dance forms, Bloco Afro carnival groups, acrobatic martial art of capoeira, vibrant visual arts, and even Bahia's ginga, the graceful swing of its people, are all living testaments to this permeating African influence. In addition, Bahia is full of beautiful beaches, and quiet and historically important countryside towns.
